Haddington town

Haddington – A Place to Live – A Place to Love

Haddington is a town that has been built around an old castle and has a fantastic history. One of the largest towns in East Lothian, it’s set within the countryside rather than on the coast, but what it lacks in sand, it makes up for in personality and countryside charm with beautiful walks and scenery close by. Haddington also has many local amenities, such as a supermarket, local restaurants and cafes.

Haddington has a long history and is a great place to live in the modern day. The town is home to many businesses and a large farming community, making it an important service centre. The town is also known for its historic buildings and charming High Street, many of which date back to medieval times. It’s the administrative centre for East Lothian, making it very central to enjoy everything this beautiful county offers.

Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, is just 20 miles away. Haddington is often known as ‘the hidden toun’ mainly because it sits in a rural environment.

Farmer’s Market

Friendly and welcoming, Haddington Farmers’ Market is a gem of a market! With a long list of stalls selling local food, drinks and crafts, this market has something for everyone. From homemade jam to hand-knit cardigans, there’s an array of products on offer and a cosy atmosphere that makes it hard to leave – even if you don’t need anything!

Amisfield Walled Garden

Amisfield Walled Garden is one of the largest walled gardens in Scotland and a popular visitor destination, offering a range of activities and events for all ages. The tranquil setting makes it an ideal place to stroll and relax in the fresh air.

The John Gray Centre

Situated on Lodge Street is The John Gray Centre, a major visitor attraction which combines East Lothian museum, local history centre, and library.

The centre is named after John Gray, who died in Haddington in 1717 and left his book collection to the town, thus establishing one of the first public lending libraries in Scotland.

The centre is an inspiring resource for the people of East Lothian, allowing them to engage and explore the history of the community.

Nungate Bridge

Once the main route into town, this bridge dates from the 16th century and has seen many invaders pass over it. The current bridge was built shortly after the siege of Haddington in 1548, which saw extensive damage to the original structure. Still standing today, it boasts three red sandstone arches. In the middle arch, there is an iron hook used for hanging criminals until 1672, when jougs were removed by order of King Charles II.

Haddington also has an array of eating and drinking establishments, from classic coffee houses to top-class restaurants, providing a selection of foods to match everyone’s taste.

There is also a range of sporting activities from Hockey to Cricket, from Curling to Cycling, from football to Badminton; whatever activity you partake in, you’re sure to find something for you.
