5 Ways to Add Stylish Shelves Like a Pro

When it comes to styling shelves, there are some tried-and-true methods that can give you that straight-from-the-pages-of-a-magazine look. Here are some of my favourite tips and tricks to help you achieve the same result in your own home.

1. Create an Art Gallery

Displaying art on shelves or picture ledges is a fun method to get that art gallery feel while still having everything organized. These shelves are painted the same colour as the wall, allowing them to recede into the background but also give the art some structure.

Another benefit to this style is that it avoids the need to hammer lots of picture hooks into the wall and gives the flexibility to rearrange the art or add new pieces to the mix.

2. Show Off Your Collectibles

Displaying collections can be a great way to add visual interest to a room.

You can add style to a home office by displaying a collection of objects on a wall-mounted shelving unit above your desk or on the opposite wall.

3. Put a Little Light on the Subject

Integrated lighting that illuminates art and other objects, offers a stylish finish with the backlighting enhancing each of the objects and giving each piece its own unique presence.

If you have a central fireplace with space at either side this technique can create a feeling of symmetry, even if the object placement isn’t exactly symmetrical.

4. Use Baskets and Bins

Open shelves can be clutter magnets in a busy household, so using containers for a more tailored and tidier appearance can help avoid this.

An ideal location for these would be in the hallway, providing lots of storage space for the family to stash their stuff on the way in.

5. Group by Color

Grouping books by the colour of their jackets on library units creates a visual impact in a room. Almost looks like an abstract piece of modern art. Having a darker wood can allow the colours to pop out and arranging books in an artful way can look great especially when you have a lot of them.
